Prep golf teams gear up for inaugural county tourney
The inaugural Spartanburg County boys golf tournament will tee off at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Woodfin Ridge.Boiling Springs, Broome, Byrnes, Chapman, Chesnee, Dorman, Gaffney, Landrum, Oakbrook Prep, Spartanburg , Spartanburg Christian Academy and Spartanburg Day will be the teams competing. Gaffney was invited to the tournament due to Woodruff declining an invitation.Four groups of three teams will pair up for the tournament lessons drills. Two groups will tee off on the front nine, while the other two will start on the back nine.Boiling Springs will be the host for this year's tournament. Bulldogs coach Rick Tate said the tournament was created partly due to expense issues.“Naturally with school budgets being what they are, we decided on a county tournament to help with travel expenses. It worked really well.”Tate said the winning team would receive a travel trophy. The top eight individuals will be named to the all-county team.Tate said all participating schools are excited about competing for both the trophy and bragging rights.“Everybody has really jumped on board,” he said. “The three private schools were really pleased to be invited and compete against the public schools. I hope when it's over with that everybody will still be just as excited about it next year.”Tate said that plans are also being discussed about moving the tournament to different locations within the county each year Choi Donated $100,000 to Japan Earthquake.
